Program Description

CSUN's Anthropology master’s program emphasizes broad training in four fields of anthropology:

  • Archaeology
  • Biological anthropology and human evolution
  • Cultural anthropology
  • Applied anthropology

You take courses in each of these areas to provide you with a comprehensive view of anthropology. At the same time, you will be able to choose elective courses to help focus your studies to your area of interest.With a master's degree in anthropology, you will receive a broad view of the field. You'll take seminars in sociocultural anthropology, archaeology, physical anthropology and anthropological theory. You will also create and take classes in an area of specialization. This will give you both breadth and depth for your degree. In your required graduate seminars, you will learn advanced theories on:

  • Cultural anthropology
  • Biological anthropology
  • Archaeology
  • Applied anthropology

You will also take classes on:

  • Research design
  • Proposal and grant writing
  • Advanced research methods

You will take three elective courses for your area of specialization. Your master's degree in anthropology will prepare you to enter a Ph.D. program or other academic careers as a teacher or researcher. You may also find a job in government to assess and maintain cultural resources. Businesses also hire anthropologists to work in market research or increase multiculturalism. You can also work for nonprofit organizations to implement cultural programs.

Admission Requirements

  • Completion of minimum University requirement for admission to graduate standing. Either (a) B.A. in Anthropology with coursework that includes introductory courses in archaeology, biological anthropology and sociocultural anthropology; anthropological theory (equivalent to ANTH 303); and anthropological methods (equivalent to ANTH 473 or ANTH 475). Students with a cumulative GPA lower than 3.0 must score at or above the 50th percentile on two of the three portions of the aptitude test of the Graduate Record Exam. Or (b) Completion of the CSUN Certificate in Foundations of Anthropological Knowledge or the Certificate in Foundations of Archaeological Knowledge with a GPA of 3.3 or higher.
  • General Requirement
    • To be admitted to CSUN as a graduate student, students must meet the following requirements:
    • Have a four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution.
    • Be in good academic standing at the last college or university attended.
    • Have satisfied one of the following conditions:
      • Attained a GPA of at least 2.5 in a baccalaureate degree program.
      • Attained a GPA of at least 2.5 in the last 60 semester (90 quarter) units attempted.
      • Hold a post-baccalaureate degree earned at a regionally accredited institution and 2.5 GPA in either the undergraduate cumulative GPA or the last 60 units.
