MA Political Science

Program Description

The graduate program in Political Science is a liberal arts program based upon superior undergraduate preparation. It requires a higher level of achievement and places greater emphasis on independent study and research than does the baccalaureate program. Department evaluation and approval are required for admission to either classified or unclassified graduate standing. The major in Political Science is designed for students who intend to work in politics, government and public policy; for students who are interested in pursuing a career in the law; or for students who are interested in pursuing an advanced degree in Political Science or other related fields in preparation for university-level teaching. Graduates of the program work in politics, government service, public policy, the nonprofit sector and in the private sector in a variety of fields. Beyond the substance of political science, students in the major hone their analytical reasoning and critical-thinking skills, their writing skills, their communication skills and their research skills. All of these are key characteristics sought after by employers in both the public and private sectors.
