Program Description

While healthcare practitioners treat diseases and injuries often one individual at a time, in public health we:

• Promote healthy behaviors, social and physical environments
• Conduct health promotion and education campaigns
• Improve health policies
• Monitor and prevent the spread of diseases
• Use data to improve the health of communities

In essence, public health focuses on the four "Ps":

• Prevention
• Promotion
• Protection
• Population health

There are many careers for those with a degree in public health, including: 

• Community Health Educator
• Disaster Preparedness Coordinator
• Environmental Specialist
• Injury Prevention Specialist
• Patient Navigator
• Outreach Educator
• Health Communication Specialist

Graduates with a bachelor's degree in public health can enter directly into professions that are growing much faster than average. The bachelor's degree is considered a desirable foundation for further graduate or professional programs, including nursing, epidemiology, healthcare management, medicine, and the Master of Public Health at SIUE.

Admission Requirements

• Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 on a 4.0 scale in Higher Secondary School.
