Geography is a liberal arts major that will prepare you for a variety of careers in both the public and private sectors. If you decide to major in geography at Western Michigan University, you will have the option to pursue one of four specialized areas: geographical information science; environmental analysis and resource management; climate science; or urban, regional and environmental planning. As a geography student at WMU, you will be encouraged to participate in a study-abroad experience, guided independent study or professional internship.
You will also be encouraged to join the Geography Club, which promotes and raises geography awareness on campus. The club meets regularly to discuss issues of mutual interests to geography students and plan industry-related activities and networking events. It organizes trips to places of geographic interest and sponsors National Geography Awareness Week.
Other organizations such as the Western Michigan Association of Planners and Students for a Sustainable Earth also offer ample opportunities for you to get involved and gain real-world experience. If you meet certain academic requirements, you may consider becoming a member of Gamma Theta Upsilon, an international geographic honor society. Members are eligible to apply for society scholarships, and have access to exclusive events and networking opportunities.
