Bachelor of Science Geology

Program Description

Western Michigan University's traditional geology major focuses on the study of rocks and minerals, petrologic relationships, rock-forming processes and field methods in the earth sciences. This program is a good fit for you if you plan to pursue a career in the geological sciences, including mining, resource exploration and recovery, environmental assessment and remediation, water resource management, construction planning or other related fields. If you decide to enter this program, you will gain strong foundation for a professional career or for further study at the graduate level by taking a variety of geosciences courses that cover the disciplines of "classical" geology. As a geology student at WMU, you will have numerous scholarship and endowment opportunities available to you, including those for general study, specific areas of study such as water quality, and endowments for students who will be pursuing teaching in geosciences.

You will have the unique opportunity to work with the Michigan Geological Repository for Research and Education, which focuses on student training, basic and applied research, and continuing education and outreach programs in energy, natural resources and the environment. You can also gain valuable experience and build your professional network through registered student organizations like the WMU Geology Club and the WMU chapter of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.
