Program Description

Western Michigan University's interpersonal communication major is designed for students who want the knowledge and learned ability to work closely with people in interpersonal relationships. This major is excellent for students interested in social service careers, where knowledge and ability in interpersonal relationships is critical to success.

As an interpersonal communication student at WMU, you will study interpersonal communication, communication theory, communication research, group communication, nonverbal communication, family communication, communication ethics, gender communication, health communication, persuasion and public speaking. If you choose this major, you will have networking and professional development opportunities available to you through volunteering, internships, and other career-specific experiences such as contributing to the Western Herald student newspaper or WIDR radio station, or joining Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society or Lambda Pi Eta communication honor society.

Admission Requirements

Your transcript is the most important piece of information.  It shows what courses you’ve taken and your grades, which allows us to assess:

  • Academic Preparation.  Successful students are prepared students and we want to make sure you’re ready for the rigors of college-level work.  We recommend*:
    -  4 years of English
    -  3-4 years of math (through second year algebra or pre-calculus)
    -  3 years of natural sciences (two or more with a lab component)
    -  2 years of the same foreign language
  • Grade Point Average.
  • Grade Trend.  How well you’ve done in your most recent courses.
