Program Description

The Department of Mathematics, located in Everett Tower, is one of the largest and oldest academic departments at Western Michigan University, being among 12 departments listed in the University's first bulletin, published in 1904. Major programs include mathematics, applied mathematics and secondary mathematics education at the bachelors, masters and doctoral levels, in addition to numerous minors and general education courses. Our mathematics faculty maintains a strong reputation for scholarship through an impressive level of research and grant activity. As a mathematics student at WMU, you will benefit from student lectures, speakers and mathematical discussions sponsored by Pi Mu Epsilon. Another organization you may consider joining is the University's chapter of the Science and Mathematics Teacher Association.

Admission Requirements

Your transcript is the most important piece of information.  It shows what courses you’ve taken and your grades, which allows us to assess:

  • Academic Preparation.  Successful students are prepared students and we want to make sure you’re ready for the rigors of college-level work.  We recommend*:
    -  4 years of English
    -  3-4 years of math (through second year algebra or pre-calculus)
    -  3 years of natural sciences (two or more with a lab component)
    -  2 years of the same foreign language
  • Grade Point Average.
  • Grade Trend.  How well you’ve done in your most recent courses.
