Program Description

Mechanical engineers plan and design machines, tools, engines, and other equipment or systems that produce or use power. They use an innovative approach to design products such as instruments, controls, engines and machines as well as mechanical, thermal, hydraulic and heat transfer systems. They plan and direct fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment in addition to developing methods and procedures for testing products and services. Mechanical engineers direct and coordinate construction and installation activities to ensure conformance with engineering design and customer specifications. They coordinate operation, maintenance and repair activities to get the best use of machines and systems. Mechanical engineers may also evaluate field installations and recommend new designs to eliminate malfunctions.

As a mechanical engineering student at WMU, you will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on projects with local industry, participate in research with faculty, qualify for our departmental and college scholarships, study abroad, and become a team member of exciting projects such as, the Sunseeker solar racing. WMU's College of Engineering and Applied Sciences also has more than 30 student organizations open to you, including the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Condition Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Engineers Without Borders, National Society of Black Engineers, Pi Tau Sigma, Society of Automotive Engineers, Society of Women Engineers, Tau Beta Pi and Theta Tau. Recent WMU graduates with degrees in mechanical engineering are working in a variety of industries, including:

Admission Requirements

Your transcript is the most important piece of information.  It shows what courses you’ve taken and your grades, which allows us to assess:

  • Academic Preparation.  Successful students are prepared students and we want to make sure you’re ready for the rigors of college-level work.  We recommend*:
    -  4 years of English
    -  3-4 years of math (through second year algebra or pre-calculus)
    -  3 years of natural sciences (two or more with a lab component)
    -  2 years of the same foreign language
  • Grade Point Average.
  • Grade Trend.  How well you’ve done in your most recent courses.
