Statisticians design experiments, analyze data and interpret results. The National Science Foundation estimates that the demand for statisticians will exceed the number of graduates for at least the next 10 years. Western Michigan University's statistics program integrates mathematics and statistics coursework while emphasizing computer applications. Graduates apply their knowledge of statistical methods to a variety of subject areas including biology, economics, engineering, medicine, public health, psychology, marketing, education and sports. Many economic, social, political and military decisions cannot be made without statistical techniques, such as the design of experiments to gain federal government approval of a newly manufactured drug. If you choose to major in statistics at WMU, you will be strongly encouraged to develop skills in another area. This will provide a field of application for your statistical knowledge and enhance employment prospects.
