Bachelor of Science Atmospheric Science

Program Description

The atmospheric science faculty seeks to provide a high quality educational experience for students majoring in atmospheric science in preparation for industrial or government positions, and for graduate study. The program is also designed for those planning to teach environmental science or physics at the 8-12 level, or who need atmospheric science knowledge and skills relevant to future studies in the sciences.

The student who wishes to obtain a Bachelor of Science Degree in Atmospheric Science may do so by following one of the two curriculum plans referred to as concentrations:

  • Atmospheric Science
  • Weather Broadcasting

The Bachelor of Science program in Atmospheric Sciences addresses the needs of students interested in studying meteorology or climate science. The program provides students with an in-depth knowledge of the physical characteristics, motions and processes of air; as well as the interactions of this protective layer with the underlying oceans and continents. The undergraduate program emphasizes a systems approach, combining traditional atmospheric sciences with emerging fields. In particular, the program focuses on the fields of tropical meteorology and oceanography that are directly linked to the Gulf of Mexico and surrounding coastal regions where the university is strategically located.When you reach graduation, you’ll have the skills to take on careers that include:

  • Data Scientist in Weather, Climate, and Air Quality

Admission Requirements

  • Although not required for admission purposes, applicants are strongly encouraged to submit SAT or ACT scores to the university for academic advising and enrollment purposes.
  • Students who graduate high school within the high school class quartile below will be guaranteed admission if the required diploma type is earned.
  • Students who attend a non-ranking high school, will be provided a class ranking based off of their GPA and the admissions office's internal ranking system.
1st QuarterGuaranteed Admission: Test scores optional, but encouraged.
2nd QuarterGuaranteed Admission: Test scores optional, but encouraged.
3rd and 4th QuartersHolistic Review: Test scores optional. Review considers combination of success indicators including test scores, unweighted high school GPA, and class rank.
