The department consists of 45 tenured or tenure-track faculty, representing the best of combined teaching and research. These professionals bring our students the current topics, the newest techniques and discoveries, and the potential new directions from their fields of specialization. Our faculty and students explore topics in three research divisions: Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, and Ecology and Evolution.
Biology and Biochemistry faculty members consistently win teaching and research awards at the College and University levels. They belong to more than 20 national professional organizations, societies, and scientific journals (as members of the editorial boards). In the last five years, their research efforts have led to over 400 refereed articles, invited papers, chapters, and books. This research is supported by more than $8 million yearly in grants held by faculty from federal and other sources outside the University.
We strongly encourage undergraduate students to participate in the departmental seminar series featuring prominent outside speakers as well as departmental faculty and their research associates. We also engage undergraduates in our research laboratories with many of our undergraduates completing a prestigious Senior Honors Thesis. These research experiences are invaluable to students going on to graduate school, health professions, or the rapidly growing biotechnology industry.
