Program Description

The M. Ed. in curriculum and instruction — reading, language arts, and literature education offers graduates two options to prepare for positions in literacy education:

  • A Master’s degree without certification – This option enables the students and advisors to tailor a degree plan specific to interests in literacy education. Students interested in this route may be previously certified to teach or interested in learning more about research in the field.
  • A Master’s Degree with a reading specialist certification – this certification allows students to work at all levels, from K-12th grade. They will typically assist students with reading through various methods and strategies and also serve as a coach/mentor to other teachers.

The master’s program in curriculum and instruction — reading, language arts, and literature education develops professional, interpersonal, and intrapersonal skills through

  • Core coursework
  • Specialized electives
  • A capstone project

Students will specifically learn to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of literacy development for early childhood through 12th grade students.
  • Be cognizant of books and strategies that motivate youngsters to become lifetime readers.
  • Be able to administer and interpret various assessment tools used to evaluate reading difficulties.
  • Demonstrate presentation skills for working with in-service teachers in the area of professional development.

Admission Requirements

  • College requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 
  • Applicants interested in pursuing a graduate degree with a Teacher or Professional Certification from the State of Texas must complete the supplemental question(s) in the ApplyWeb application.
  • If the applicant is eligible for teacher or professional certification, the College’s certification office will submit an electronic offer letter to the applicant’s personal email address (not ApplyWeb). In addition, the applicant may be required to provide additional documentation prior to enrollment for certification-related coursework.
