Program Description

Immerse yourself in the study of people, culture and society. Learn about the key social factors that influence groups and organizations and develop skills in research and data analysis. If you’re interested in the study of people, culture, and society, a career in sociology might be right for you. In this fascinating program, you’ll study:

In addition to acquiring an in-depth understanding of the key social factors that affect groups and organizations, students will gain an understanding of basic research methods and develop critical reasoning skills.

This major will prepare you for jobs in the public and private sectors, including law enforcement, social services, business, urban centers, government and health centers. An undergraduate degree in sociology also prepares students for graduate study in a variety of fields such areas as urban planning, crime and delinquency, minorities and ethnic studies, family counseling, anthropology, alcohol and substance abuse, social psychology, social work, medical sociology, women's studies, demography and gerontology.

Admission Requirements

  • Official academic transcripts and/or Foreign Academic Credential Evaluation (FACE)* for all foreign transcripts. Evaluations of foreign transcripts are accepted from any NACES or AICE member such as WES, IFCS, Scholaro, or SpanTran.
  • Mercy College takes a holistic approach in reviewing each student’s application. In the admission decision, we review a student’s transcript and academic record, including the courses taken and the grades attained. Other factors considered include the written essay, letters of recommendation, leadership potential, extracurricular and service-related activities.
  • We do not require ACT or SAT for international undergraduate students
