Program Description

With more than two million Spanish speakers in New York City alone, a degree in Spanish will not only benefit you in your personal life but also in your professional life. It will provide you with skills that are transferable to careers in both the public and private sectors. Whether you are interested in business, healthcare, education, or the arts, a Spanish degree is a valuable asset and a meaningful credential that will set you apart. It serves as certification of your bilingualism and identifies you as culturally competent and highly literate. Courses in the Spanish Major allow students to master written and spoken Spanish and to explore all aspects of Hispanic literature and culture, including film, music and visual art. Our courses also examine current issues in Latin America—including the United States—and Spain. Students in the Spanish Major will acquire critical thinking skills, an in-depth understanding of the Spanish-speaking world, and a solid liberal arts education. Course offerings are complemented by a dynamic lecture and event series throughout the academic year and by internship opportunities at leading Hispanic cultural institutions and business organizations in New York City.

A degree in Spanish—bilingualism with a foundation in the liberal arts—opens the door to successful and fulfilling careers in a variety of fields including business, law, social work, health care, education, marketing, communications, and translation.

Admission Requirements

• Official academic transcripts and/or Foreign Academic Credential Evaluation (FACE)* for all foreign transcripts. Evaluations of foreign transcripts are accepted from any NACES or AICE member such as WES, IFCS, Scholaro, or SpanTran.
• Mercy College takes a holistic approach in reviewing each student’s application. In the admission decision, we review a student’s transcript and academic record, including the courses taken and the grades attained. Other factors considered include the written essay, letters of recommendation, leadership potential, extracurricular and service-related activities.
• We do not require ACT or SAT for international undergraduate students
