BA (Hons) English Literature and Welsh (a Pathway for First Language Students)

Program Description

Exploring English and Welsh literature, the Welsh language and multiculturalism on this three-year course opens up a range of exciting career possibilities by helping you to develop transferable skills which employers want. You will study how language works, how societies communicate and centuries of literature, from the 14th century Welsh poet Dafydd a Gwilym to the contemporary verse of Mererid Hopwood.We offer varied and flexible course content, so you can shape your course to your interests. These could be Gothic and genre fiction, gender and culture, Renaissance literature, national and global literatures, modernity and contemporary writing, 19th century literature, creative and professional writing, how language works, Welsh literature from the 14th century to the present day, Welsh playwriting, protest poetry, story-tellers or the legal status of the Welsh language.

You can get involved with projects with the Dylan Thomas Centre and the National Theatre Wales. We have a strong, campus-based community and our English Society organises a range of literary, social and cultural events. You will also have an academic mentor if you need any pastoral or academic support and work placements will further boost your career prospects.

Admission Requirements

  • Arab Students:- Candidates are expected to have achieved one of the following in the relevant curriculum:
    • Al-Thanawaya Al-Amah (GSEC): 60% overall including 60% in 5 relevant subjects
    • American High School: Minimum GPA 2.0 (70%)
    • Cambridge iGCSE: 5 passed with a minimum C grade average
    • IB Certificate: Min 20 Points and must pass mathematics
  • Indian Students:-Candidates are expected to have achieved 70% Year XII including Standard XII in English - 70% or above (or equivalent).
