Program Description

From advanced materials to drug development and more, chemistry drives the discoveries and technologies that transform our lives in the 21st century. With a bachelor's degree from UAB, you'll be primed for a variety of careers in fields such as healthcare, forensics, journalism, research, and education.

But no matter what your future holds, we want to give you a competitive edge by offering research opportunities and an honors program to develop critical thinking and communication. First, you'll need to build a foundation with our core courses of Calculus, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Fundamentals of Biochemistry, and Quantitative Analysis. Then, you can choose from three concentrations, and for each one, a full-time academic advisor will help you stay on track. If you wish to pursue a career in teaching, you'll even be able to earn a certification to teach chemistry or general science through the UABTeach program. The UAB Department of Chemistry provides students with the education and practical experience they need to participate in new scientific frontiers. From our unique peer learning and teaching program to our world-class faculty and state-of-the-art research facilities, UAB Chemistry advances the boundaries of chemical scholarship and discoveries. Our programs are approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS), and provide exceptional scientific preparation for pre-health students who will take professional entrance exams, including medicine (MD), dentistry (DDM), optometry (OD), or pharmacy (PharmD).

Admission Requirements

Satisfactory completion of a secondary/high school diploma with an overall GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale; SAT or ACT may be required for some programs
