As a philosophy student, you won't just study ideas and thoughts related to these questions, you'll study critical thinking, problem solving, and how to analyze and argue. We want this foundation to help you excel in fields such as medicine, law, journalism, politics, business, and more.

Interested in graduate school? According to the Educational Testing Service, philosophy majors earn higher GRE scores than students from any other discipline. It's no wonder, considering the lengths we go to in preparing you. Not only will we teach you the methods, history, and problems in philosophy, but we'll train you to apply this knowledge in the field. Best of all, because you have your own unique goals, we'll help you customize a curriculum to fit your needs. If you choose the ethics concentration, your coursework will concentrate on ethical issues and social issues. If you have yet to declare a first major, consider choosing philosophy. The Department of Philosophy at UAB offers a wide range of philosophy courses for you to explore and you will find many areas of philosophy that will pique your interest. When you have completed at least 10 such courses, you will have earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, and you will have spent your time well as a student at UAB in discussing many fascinating questions and topics with your professors and other students in your classes.

Admission Requirements

Satisfactory completion of a secondary/high school diploma with an overall GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale; SAT or ACT may be required for some programs
