Program Description

Psychology is the science of mind and behavior. With a thorough knowledge of psychology, you can offer great value in a wide variety of fields, including business, advertising, politics, law, education, and mental health counseling.

But first, you need to have a solid foundation of psychology theory in order to understand why people do what they do. That's why we begin your education with courses such as Developmental Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Brain, Mind, and Behavior. Then we'll take your education outside the classroom by giving you the chance to complete a research project or community service. Best of all, you could get the opportunity to gain real-world experience by participating in professional shadowing at a nearby treatment facility.The curriculum in psychology provides a flexible program for the psychology major leading to the Bachelor of Science degree. Alternatively, students can earn a minor in psychology or take advantage of the numerous course offerings that are open to all students. The department provides a variety of experiences to give students an understanding of the basic principles and mechanisms of behavior. The scientific method is emphasized throughout the curriculum. Students with a major or minor in psychology are encouraged to obtain first-hand experience with both the creation of new knowledge (research) and the application of that knowledge in community and treatment settings. There are many opportunities for students to gain firsthand research experience by working with individual faculty members in a variety of laboratory, clinical, and field research settings. In addition, numerous community and treatment facilities provide settings for students to observe and participate in the application of psychological principles to the solution of individual and social problems.

Admission Requirements

Satisfactory completion of a secondary/high school diploma with an overall GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale; SAT or ACT may be required for some programs
