Master of Science in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology

Program Description

In this interdisciplinary program, which spans biology, biochemistry and biomedicine, you'll have opportunities to pursue basic or translational research in areas from cancer, infectious disease and neuroscience to immunology, cell signaling and developmental biology. You'll use a wide array of techniques to explore a spectrum of important biological questions through innovative, collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches. As a biochemistry, cell and molecular biology student, you'll build on foundational science coursework through an individually-tailored program that emphasizes research skills and career development. You'll work closely with faculty committed to excellence in their teaching and their research and recognized as leaders on campus and in their fields.

Our master’s program is research-intensive, giving you exceptional hands-on expertise as you work to complete original research and a master’s thesis. Successful completion of the MS requires a minimum of 30 hours of graduate work beyond the bachelor's degree. Your individual program of study will be developed in consultation with your faculty advisor and thesis committee. As a graduate student in the BCMB master’s degree program, you will:

  • Be mentored by award-winning faculty with expertise in research and teaching, who are committed to student success.
  • Gain access to the technology you need in the Biosciences Building, as well as CMU's other research facilities at the nearby Dow Science Complex and College of Medicine Building.
  • Join a program that is small and select, ensuring that you receive significant one-on-one interactions with faculty mentors.

Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related discipline
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 and major GPA of 3.0
  • A strong background in basic sciences including biology, chemistry, and mathematics
