Program Description

Economics makes you a better decision maker. Law sharpens your skills of reasoning and argument. Central Michigan University's law and economics major puts those disciplines together, giving you the insight into the boardroom or the courtroom. As a law and economics major at CMU, you’ll learn to think critically about complicated situations and gauge how others are likely to react.

This unique program is one of just a handful in the United States. If you want to go to law school, you'll get reasoning and argumentation skills you'll draw on for years to come. And you'll get a broad overview of individual rights and our legal systems that complement work in many other disciplines. Classes in economic theory will contribute to your analytical and decision making skills. Business law courses will expose you to basic legal concepts, such as contracts and property rights, various issues in discrimination, and regulatory environment of business. Beyond that, have the freedom to take courses in other areas that interest you. (A variation of this program is also offered through our College of Business Administration. Students in that program take more required business courses, and take fewer elective classes.)Graduates of CMU's law and economics program are problem-solvers and solution-finders. You'll become a better writer and thinker—skills that will serve you well in law, business or countless other careers.
