Program Description

Mechanical engineers are math and science whizzes who love to create. From cars to robots, materials to manufacturing, mechanical engineers design and build the things that shape our lives. Get both theoretical and practical experience in our ABET accredited mechanical engineering program. You’ll learn how to apply your advanced math knowledge. You’ll conduct experiments. You’ll gain the skills needed to take any project from idea to reality.

You could join our mechanical engineering majors in designing and building innovative products such as a "hotel" to preserve local bees, a motorized cooler that follows its owner, or an automatic fishing pole. You can help faculty members develop new low-cost, renewable fuels or improve solar energy efficiency. In your classes, you can dive deeper into areas such as machine design, advanced materials, and thermodynamics. Outside the classroom, you'll have many opportunities to collaborate with faculty and fellow students on projects you're passionate about. As a mechanical engineering student here, you'll:

• Complete design projects as part of the curriculum, from freshmen introductory courses to the senior-level capstone course.
• Build race cars with CMU's Society of Automotive Engineers Baja Team or the Formula One team.
• Design, construct and race boats made from cardboard and duct tape as part of a homecoming tradition.
• Obtain a degree from a university recently named on of the top 25 schools for mechanical engineering by GradReports.

Admission Requirements

• A GPA of 2.5 required in year 12th.
