Program Description

Turn your love of music into a career. Develop a professional framework in music performance, history, theory and education in CMU's music program. You’ll learn from our accomplished faculty musicians, access state-of-the-art facilities and study with talented peers of all musical backgrounds. In our music program, you'll become a well-rounded performer, musician, and teacher. You'll deepen skills in music performance, theory, history, music technology, ear training and more.

You'll study an instrument of your choice and earn a degree that will prepare you for a variety of careers as well as graduate school.As a student at CMU, you can share your love of music with other students in the School of Music Residential College. This means you'll live with other passionate student musicians and form lasting friendships and networks. The residence hall also offers practice rooms for your convenience — no extra trudging through the snow during the winter. Love football? Join the marching band. Enjoy harmonizing with others? Play music for an opera. Have a knack for improvisation? Our jazz band can help with that. As a music student at CMU, you'll have a number of ensembles, festivals, recitals and competitions to choose from. As a music student here, you'll:

• Have exclusive, on-campus access to MIDI computer stations where you can work on assignments, research or create your own compositions.
• Be able to attend professional music conferences and network with other music students from around the U.S.
• Join a school with a 100 percent placement rate for graduates seeking teaching positions.
• Be part of an alumni network of graduates who have gone on to become directors of bands, professors of their instruments or voice, and pursue advanced degrees in law and arts management.
