Bachelor of Sociology

Program Description

Take on the issues of social justice, inequality and diversity. Learn to solve real-world problems using data-driven research and build a better understanding of modern social life and contemporary culture. Sociology majors study societies: how they develop, how they evolve, how they work (or don’t) and how they fit together. As a sociology major here, you’ll build a stronger understanding of our shared humanity — our unity as well as our diversity.

In the classroom, you’ll dive deep into topics such as social inequality, adolescence, human trafficking and gender and culture. Beyond the classroom, you’ll have opportunities to conduct research — including surveys and interviews — in collaboration with faculty members. A sociology major builds your understanding of human relationships — a valuable attribute no matter what your goals are. The major leads to rewarding careers in social services, corrections, education, youth support and many other fields. As a sociology student at CMU, you can:

  • Tailor your studies to match your interests with courses in class and poverty, the sociology of childhood, gender and sexuality, race relations and more.
  • Pursue an optional concentration in social and criminal justice or youth studies.
  • Expand your horizons by being inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta, the international sociology honor society, or another of our many student-run organizations.
  • Apply for scholarships designed specifically for students of sociology.
