MSc Computing

Program Description

The Masters of Science (MSc) in Computing is a 1 year full time (2 year part-time) taught course that introduces some of the latest emerging technologies in the areas of cloud computing, embedded systems, secure architecture and Artificial Intelligence. The course allows the student to study the framework of computer science from a theoretical point of view and apply this knowledge to the development of industrial software in a research-led dissertation. The focus is on ensuring that the student has the appropriate mathematical foundations and programming to develop cutting edge skills for practical application.

Graduates of this programme will be capable of:

  • Designing, managing and developing complex quality-assured software systems;
  • Identifying computing problems that require further research and developing research strategies for the investigation of these problems;
  • Analysing and critically evaluating emerging technologies and trends in the computing industry from a business opportunity perspective;
  • Taking responsibility for the work of individuals and groups, and will develop a high level of competence in initiating, leading and managing technology projects and processes.

Career Options

The MSc in Computing will provide you with the skills and knowledge to develop your interests in an IT career. Typical career paths include software engineering, software design, systems support engineer, software engineering researcher, and project management.

Advanced interaction design and evaluation, analysis and visualisation of data from medical sensor devices and pervasive systems, and advanced computational techniques are extensively covered opening a vast range of industrial and research based employment opportunities.

Admission Requirements

The standard minimum entry requirements for admission to the Master of Science in Computing are:

  • A minimum Second Class Honours (55%) in Computing or equivalent qualification in a cognate discipline or
  • Higher Diploma in Science in Computing Level 8 award (DkIT)

Strong programming skills are essential. In the case of competition for places, selection will be made based on primary degree results and/or interviews.
